Stems to c. 2 m long. Leaves 1–4 (rarely to 7) cm long, 2–8 mm thick, usually shining green, sometimes yellowish or tinged red, terete to rather obscurely trigonous. Flowers 2–5 cm diam.; pedicel 1–8cm long, elongating in fruit; calyx tube obconic; the 2 longest sepals usually c. 1 (rarely to c. 3) cm long, enlarging in fruit; petaloid staminodes c. 1–2 cm long. Capsule obconic, c. 1 cm long and wide (to 18 mm wide when opened); seeds ovoid, slightly compressed, almost smooth, c. 0.8 mm long. Flowers mainly Oct.–Feb.

LoM, MuM, Wim, VVP, VRiv, MSB, RobP, MuF, GipP, OtP, WaP, Gold, CVU, GGr, EGL, WPro, OtR, Strz, VAlp. Also WA, SA, Qld, NSW, Tas. Common bordering coastal salt-marsh and sea-cliffs, as well as inland (chiefly north-west) in saline depressions and on heavy alluvial soils.
