Leaves (5–)9–c. 21 cm long; sheaths glossy golden-brown. Inflorescences usually 5–8, each 5–8(–10) mm long and borne on an axis 14–60 cm long; bracts c. 6–12(–15), arranged in c. 3–5 whorls; upper fertile bracts slightly irregularly torn but margin never appearing fringed; lower sterile bracts ± the same size as fertile bracts. Anthers 1–1.8 mm long. Style lobes c. 2 mm long. Fruit opening along entire length. Flowers Dec.–Jan.
