Perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate, sessile; leaflets usually 5, entire, upper 3 arranged towards apex of rachis, lower 2 often smaller, stipule-like, stem-clasping; stipules minute. Inflorescence axillary, capitate, usually many-flowered; pedunculate; bract usually trifoliate, leafy; Flowers white or pink, pedicellate; calyx campanulate or urceolate, teeth 5, equal or unequal; standard oblong, often constricted in middle; wings oblong, obtuse; keel obovate, rounded, dark red; stamens diadelphous. Pod subglobose to linear, dehiscent; seeds 1–many, lacking a conspicuous aril.
About 8 species from the Mediterranean region; 1 species naturalised in Australia.
Often included in Lotus.
