Rhizomatous perennial, culms ascending to erect, to 1.6 m high, smooth to scabrous, typically decurved just below inflorescence. Leaves smooth to moderately scabrous; blade flat, to 15 cm long and 12 mm wide, mostly glabrous but usually with a line of stiff hairs along the margin; ligule firmly membranous, to 1.5 mm long but often minute. Inflorescence a dense oblong-ovate panicle, 2–8 cm long (excluding awns); glumes subequal, acuminate, 6–10 mm long, bristly along the keels; lemma (including apical lobes c. 2 mm long) equal to or slightly exceeding glumes, callus hairs rather sparse, 1–2 mm long; awn 12–20 mm long. Flowers Nov.–Mar.
NIS, EGL, EGU, HSF, HNF, MonT, VAlp. Also NSW. An uncommon species of dryish elevated forests, often occurring on shallow rocky soils.
