Perennial tussocks, sometimes dying from the centre forming expanding annular plants or colonies, or occasionally stoloniferous and forming loose wefts. Leaves spine-tipped, mostly rigid. Inflorescence a panicle or raceme. Spikelets 3–20-flowered, the upper florets male or sterile; glumes paired, subequal and persistent, mostly 3-nerved or apparently so; lemmas more or less 3-lobed at apex, apparently 3-nerved, but each thickening may consist of 2 or 3 individual nerves, hairs mostly basal with a dorsal line extending for varying distances up the lemma; palea about as long as lemma; stamens 3.
