Prostrate or scrambling, short-lived perennials, younger stems angular and densely papillose. Leaves opposite, petiolate; petiole partly stem-sheathing. Flowers solitary in axils, shortly pedicellate; sepals 4, alternating larger and smaller; petaloid staminodes numerous, mauve to reddish; stamens numerous; styles 4; ovary inferior, 4-locular; ovules numerous, axile. Fruit a 4-locular capsule, opening when wet via apical slits; seeds numerous.

2 species, endemic in South Africa; 1 naturalised in Australia.
