Tribolium
Small tufted or shortly rhizomatous annuals or perennials. Leaf-blades flat or inrolled. Inflorescence a distichous spike or cylindric, spike-like panicle, its base sometimes partly enclosed by the uppermost leaf-blade. Spikelets laterally flattened, 2–12-flowered, hairy or glabrous; glumes 2, broadly ovate, strongly keeled, 3–7-nerved; lemmas awnless, or shortly awned, 5–9-nerved, with tufts of stiff, acute, truncate or apically swollen hairs near the base; palea slightly shorter than lemma.
11 species, confined to the Cape Province of South Africa; 3 naturalised in Australia and Victoria.
