Entosthodon apophysatus
(Taylor) Mitt.Autoicous. Turves on soil. Stems 2–5 (–7) mm long, once branched, red-brown. Leaves broadly obovate to oblong-spathulate, 1.5–3.5 mm long, 0.75–0.9 mm wide, concave, incurved when dry; costa ending a few to several cells below base of arista or fusing with it and appearing long-excurrent; margins entire, plane, without a border; apex acuminate, with yellow arista; laminal cells in apical half oblong-hexgonal, (24–) 30–60 μm long, 17–30 μm wide, longer and more oblong near base; alar cells 2–4, moderately inflated. Seta 2–4 mm long, pale reddish-brown. Capsule oblong-cylindric, symmetric, erect or inclined, (2–) 3–4.5 mm long. Operculum plano-convex, c. 0.4 mm diameter. Peristome absent.
LoM, MuM, Wim, GleP, VVP, VRiv, MuF, GipP, WaP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT, EGL, EGU, HSF, OtR, VAlp. Widespread on bare soil in disturbed sites (e.g. roadsides), open areas and among sclerophyll woodland, mainly throughout the western half of the state but with several occurrences near the Snowy River in East Gippsland. Widespread throughout Australia.
