Perennial epiphytic or terrestrial plants. Rhizome dichotomously branched, with numerous rhizoids but no true roots. Stem undivided or dichotomously branched with simple leaves or scales. Sporangia united in a 2- or 3-chambered sporangial capsule (synangium), borne in axil of bilobed sporophyll. Only one sort of spore produced. Gametophyte colourless and minute, rarely found, associated with symbiotic fungi.
