Tufted, rhizomatous or stoloniferous perennials (rarely annual). Ligule membranous. Inflorescence a panicle, the branches sometimes raceme-like. Spikelets with 1 fertile floret; glumes absent or (in some interpretations) much reduced and appearing as a bilobed, dilated pedicel apex; lemma strongly compressed laterally, hispid, awnless; palea subequal to, but much narrower than lemma.
18 species, from tropical and warm-temperate regions; 2 species (1 indigenous) in Australia.
