Erect annual, rarely perennial, herbs. Leaves cauline, alternate, usually irregularly pinnate or dentate. Capitula radiate, solitary, pedunculate; involucral bracts 3- or 4-seriate, unequal, herbaceous with scarious margins; receptacle conical, naked, pitted. Ray florets neuter or female, 1- or 2-seriate, white. Disc florets bisexual, (2–)5-lobed, yellow; anthers obtuse at base, with an ovate apical appendage; style branches linear with truncate, penicillate apices. Cypselas cylindric to obovoid or fusiform, ribs 7–10, faces glabrous; pappus absent (sometimes a minute corona).
4 species native to northern Africa and southwest Europe; 1 introduced in Australia.
