L. Smooth Cat's-earAnnual herb 10–60 cm high. Leaves obovate to oblanceolate in outline, 2–20 cm long, 5–30 mm wide, obtuse, base attenuate, margins toothed to pinnatifid, glabrous or with a few hairs mainly on margins. Capitulum 4–16 mm diam.; scapes 1–few, erect, simple or branched; peduncle hardly inflated below capitula; outer involucral bracts ovate; inner involucral bracts narrow-lanceolate, 8–17 mm long, reflexed in fruit, glabrous. Ligules 2–5 mm long, hardly exceeding involucre, bright or pale yellow. Outer cypselas obconical, 2.5–6 mm long, truncate; inner cypselas fusiform, 6–12 mm long, beaked; pappus 2-seriate, inner plumose bristles 9–15 mm long, outer scabrous bristles 3–6 mm long. Flowers mostly Aug.–Dec.

Native to Europe and western Asia. Common and widespread throughout much of Victoria, mostly in dry areas or on freely draining or very shallow soils.
