Deyeuxia monticola
(Roem. & Schult.) VickeryTufted glabrous perennial, culms erect, to 90 cm high. Leaf-blades scabrous, inrolled or narrowly folded, to 20 cm long and c. 1 mm wide, usually rather stiff, often reddish, particularly toward the sheath and apex; ligules obtuse, minutely ciliate at apex 1–3 mm long. Inflorescence a narrow spike-like panicle, dense or rather sparse, 5–12 (rarely to 25) cm long. Spikelets 3.5–6 mm long, green or tinged reddish; glumes subequal, the lower usually slightly shorter than upper, acuminate, keeled, scabrous along the keel; lemma about as long as to slightly exceeding glumes, acute, finely scabrous, awned from within the lower third; awn usually longer than lemma, twisted in lower part; callus hairs to c. 2 mm long; rachilla bristle plumose, about half to almost as long as lemma. Flowers Oct.–Feb.
VRiv, Gold, CVU, GGr, EGL, EGU, WPro, HSF, HNF, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Rather common in subalpine woodlands, montane forests and alpine grasslands above c. 1200 m, mostly from Lake Mountain eastwards, but with scattered records between Macedon and Daylesford, and descending to lower altitudes in a few localities in East Gippsland (e.g. near Orbost, Club Terrace and Bonang).
