Weak, ascending herb to c. 80 cm high; stems c. villous with spreading to recurved hairs. Leaves c. ovate, 2–6 cm long, 1–3 cm wide, surfaces pilose, apex obtuse to subacute, margin serrate; petiole 13–15 mm long. Flowers c. 8–24 per pseudowhorl, shortly pedicellate. Calyx 8–10 mm long, long-pilose, with some sessile or shortly stalked glands, teeth subulate, those of abaxial lip 2.5–4 mm long, nearly twice as long as those of adaxial lip; corolla pink or mauve, 10–18(–22) mm long, pubescent outside and in throat, lips each c. 2–3 mm long. Mericarps not seen. Flowers Nov.–Feb.
VVP, GipP, HSF, HNF, VAlp. Native through much of Europe. Occasionally cultivated, and recorded as naturalised in moist forest near Kevington, Matlock and Traralgon South. .
