Leaves alternate, opposite below, lanceolate to ovate, mostly 5–10 cm long and 1–4 cm wide, green and pubescent above, greyish and densely pubescent beneath, apex acute or rounded, base auriculate, margins toothed to deeply lobed; petiole winged, to c. 3 cm long. Capitula 2–6, 15–30 mm diam.; involucral bracts 2-seriate, narrow-lanceolate, 7–15 mm long, pubescent. Ray florets 12–15, bright yellow, ligules 10–20 mm long; disc florets numerous, bright yellow. Cypselas obovate to obovoid, 3–7 mm long, dark brown; ray cypselas trigonous, wingless, tuberculate, pappus absent; disc cypselas flat, pale-winged, pubescent, pappus of 2 awns, 1–2 mm long, obscured by wings, deciduous. Flowers mostly summer to autumn.
MuM, VRiv, RobP, MuF. Also naturalised WA, NT, SA, Qld, NSW. Native to North America. Occasional on roadsides and near watercourses in north-western Victoria, and apparently toxic to stock.
