Nicotiana velutina
H.-M.Wheeler Velvet TobaccoErect herb to 1.5 m high; branches pubescent with glandular and non-glandular hairs. Leaves radical and cauline or mostly radical, usually elliptic, 2–20(–28) cm long, 0.5–4(–8) cm wide, apex acute or obtuse, base attenuate, pubescent; petiole to 15 cm long, narrowly winged; upper cauline leaves lanceolate or linear, often sessile. Inflorescences terminal, panicle-like, usually few-branched. Flowers on pedicels to c. 15 mm long; calyx tubular, 5–17 mm long, pubescent; corolla white, tube 11–35 mm long, 1–5 mm wide at apex of calyx, pubescent, limb 7–30 mm diam., lobes obtuse or notched; stamens unequal, upper 4 filaments to 3.5 mm long, lower filament 5–10 mm long. Capsule ellipsoid to ovoid-ellipsoid, 5–11 mm long; seeds mostly C-shaped, 0.5–1 mm long, wrinkled. Flowers mainly spring.
LoM, MuM, Wim, VRiv, MSB, RobP, MuF, GipP, Strz. Also NT, SA, Qld, NSW. Confined to north-west Victoria usually on sand.
A sterile, F1 hybrid between N. glauca and N. velutina is known from near Hattah in the far north-west.
