Ulota
Autoicous. Asexual propagules absent. Loose short cushions or tufts. Stems ascending to erect, rarely creeping and with upright branches, simple or sparsely branched. Leaves terete-foliate, monomorphic, spreading when moist, contorted, often twisted, sometimes appressed or little-altered when dry; costa subpercurrent to percurrent; margin entire, plane or recurved near midleaf, with a distinct border of less elongate, quadrate to rectangular cells toward the base; laminal cells in apical half isodiametric to short-rectangular, papillose; basal laminal cells elongate, smooth. Acrocarpous. Calyptra mitrate, deeply lobed at base, hairy or glabrous (not in Victoria). Capsules exserted, rarely immersed (not in Victoria), usually deeply 8-ribbed when dry; stomata superficial, usually restricted to the neck, rarely on rim. Peristome double or single with endostome absent (not in Victoria); exostome 16 teeth, often united into 8 pairs, erect (not in Victoria) or reflexed; endostome when present of 8 segments, rarely with 8 intermediate segments.
67 species mostly in cool temperate regions of the world, but extending into the tropics at high altitudes (Garilleti et al. 2015); 3 species in Victoria.
The cell pattern of hyaline and less elongate rows of cells forming a distinct border to more elongate yellowish cells, both which extend to a leaf shoulder that forms an abrupt boundary with shorter cells is characteristic of Ulota and immediately distinguishes it from other genera of the family.
