Hymenophyllum rarum
R.Br. Narrow Filmy-fernRhizome creeping, slender, thread-like, without hairs. Fronds distant or crowded, often pendent, 5–15 cm long. Stipe short, slender, usually not winged, sometimes with a few hairs at base. Rachis slender, narrowly winged. Lamina 1–2-pinnate, narrowly oblong to ovate, pale grey-green, dull; ultimate segments linear to oblong, comparatively broad; margin entire; apex blunt. Sori towards tip of frond, terminal on lateral pinnae segments, partly immersed in lamina; indusium 2-lipped, narrower than segment, more or less rhomboidal, apical margins entire; V-shaped lower edges of indusium bordered by a forked vein; receptacle short.
OtP, WaP, GGr, EGL, EGU, WPro, HSF, HNF, OtR, Strz, HFE, VAlp. Also NSW, Tas. (including Bass Strait islands). New Zealand. Scattered and not common across southern Victoria, frequently occurring on lower trunks of Nothofagus.
Often growing among other filmy-ferns and superficially resembling H. cupressiforme and H. peltatum. As with H. peltatum, the pinnae are often divided on one side only. Unlike both these species, however, the pinnae of H. rarum do not have serrate margins. See also notes under H. flabellatum.
