Tufted annuals. Leaves flat or involute. Inflorescence a contracted panicle. Spikelets laterally compressed, 2–4-flowered, florets rather distant; glumes 2, very unequal, persistent, membranous, the lower 1-nerved, the upper 3-nerved, subequal to the florets; lemma linear, obscurely 3-nerved, membranous, narrowly bilobed at the apex, shortly awned from the sinus; palea 2-nerved, shorter than lemma and deeply bifid.
1 species only, native of the Mediterranean region.
