Fronds distant along rhizome, erect or scrambling, much-branched, usually with several tiers of 'dichotomous' branches, often interlacing and forming dense thickets to 2 m high or more; dormant bud protected by shiny, brown-fringed scales. Stipe long and brown, usually without scales, bristles or hairs when mature. Pinnules less than 5 mm long, sessile, flat to pouch-like, almost rounded, oblong to hemispherical. Sori with 1–6 globular sporangia splitting vertically.
