Erect or scrambling, rhizomatous perennial herb. Roots fibrous to fleshy. Aerial stems simple, erect or arching. Leaves clasping to shortly petiolate, alternate, rarely opposite or whorled, ovate to linear, entire. Inflorescence axillary, in raceme-like clusters, or a solitary flower. Flowers bisexual, usually pendent; perianth tubular to campanulate, fused in at least the lower half; stamens 6, basally fused to perianth tube, filaments filiform or flattened, anthers basifixed to dorsifixed, lobed at base, versatile, dehiscing introrsely by slits; ovary superior, 3-locular, ovules 2–8 per locule, style filiform, stigma capitate or minutely 3-lobed. Fruit a berry; seeds sub-globose.
About 60 species, from the Northern Hemisphere, principally from Asia; 2 species naturalised in Australia, 1 naturalised in Victoria.
