Perennial herbs; stems erect, much branched. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate; leaflets entire; stipules often subsagittate. Inflorescence an elongate, axillary or terminal raceme; bracts persistent; bracteoles absent. Calyx campanulate; teeth subequal to unequal, as long or longer than tube; petals white to purplish; standard obovate-oblong, obtuse; wings slightly shorter, often auriculate; keel obovate, obtuse; stamens monadelphous; anthers uniform; ovary sessile, ovules numerous, style curved, stigma terminal. Pod cylindrical, dehiscent; seeds numerous, aril absent.
6 species from Europe, western Asia and Northern Africa; 1 species previously present in Victoria but now thought to be extinct.
