Tufts on soil, rocks, logs and tree ferns. Stems 10–45 mm long, yellow-green to dark brown-red, with red-brown rhizoids toward base. Leaves oblong to linear-lanceolate, 2.2–5 mm long, 0.5–1.1 mm wide, flat, erect-spreading when moist, little altered or twisted when dry; costa extending at least ¾ leaf length but ending below apex; apex acuminate; margins serrate with single or paired teeth, with 1 (–2) rows of narrower cells but not forming a distinct border, flat; laminal cells hexagonal to rhomboidal, 30–175 μm long, 14–30 μm wide. Setae 24–50 mm long, pale yellow-brown, smooth. Capsules cylindric, horizontal or pendent, curved, 2.5–3.5 mm long. Operculum conic, 0.5–0.7 mm long.
VVP, OtP, EGU, HSF, OtR, Strz, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Also New South Wales and Tasmania. New Zealand, Argentina and Chile. Recorded from Wet-sclerophyll forest and cool-temperate rainforest in the Otways, Strzelecki Ranges and Errinundra Plateau.
