Two subspecies with M. tenuis subsp. tenuis occurring in Victoria. Macrocoma tenuis subsp. sullivantii (Müller Hal.) Vitt occurs in Asia, South and North America and Hawaii, and generally differs from M. tenuis subsp. tenuis by having longer leaves with more acute apices and laminal cells in the apical half that become smaller toward the margin (Vitt 1980).
