Epiphytic or rock-dwelling, medium- to small-sized ferns. Rhizome long or short, creeping or errect, usually clothed in scales. Fronds well-spaced along rhizome or crowded, sometimes articulated at rhizome (with mechanism for periodic shedding of fronds). Lamina simple or pinnately lobed. Sori superficial or immersed in laminal cavities, round or oval, without indusium; spores bilateral or tetrahedral.
Between 25 to 56 genera worldwide; 18 in Australia, 3 in Victoria.
