Ephemerum cristatum
(Hook.f. & Wilson) Müll.Hal.Plants 1–1.5 mm tall, scattered or gregarious on an extensive protonema. Leaves 6–10; costae rudimentary, bistratose, 2–3 cells wide, failing before apex or percurrent, absent in lower leaves and bases of larger leaves; margins plane, entire to irregularly dentate in lower leaves and basal half of perichaetial leaves, laciniate with compound, antler-like teeth in apical half of perichaetial leaves; cells oblong to irregularly rhomboidal, 30–200 μm long, 12–25 μm wide, smooth or prorate; perichaetial leaves spathulate or oblong-lanceolate, 1–1.3 mm long, 0.2–0.4 mm wide, arched over capsule, often conspicuously cristate on abaxial apical half, with acute, obtuse, mucronate, acuminate apex, sometimes with a terminal toothed awn to 0.5 mm long. Capsules globose or subglobose, c. bright red to reddish-brown at maturity. Calyptrae campanulate.
