Culms leafy, erect or procumbent, to 15 cm long. Leaf-blades to 8 cm long and 4 mm wide, scabrous along upper part of keel and margins, often overtopping inflorescence; ligules toothed, 1–2 mm long. Inflorescence oblong to narrowly ovoid, 2–4 cm long. Spikelets 7–10 mm long; lower glume 2–3 mm long, upper glume 3.5–5 mm long; lower lemmas 5–6 mm long, the upper 2 or 3 much shorter. Flowers mainly Oct.–Nov.
MuM, Wim, VVP. Also naturalised in SA, NSW, western USA, New Zealand. Indigenous to the Mediterranean and nearby areas. In Victoria, largely localized in the cereal growing areas around Dimboola, Warracknabeal, Donald and Horsham, with an outlying 1992 record from the Melbourne suburb of Footscray.
