Torilis
Hairy annual or rarely biennial herbs with a slender taproot. Leaves 1–3-pinnate; petiole sheathing. Inflorescence an axillary or terminal compound umbel that can appear simple because of the sometimes very short peduncles and rays; involucral bracts few or absent; rays 6–12 or absent; involucral bracteoles several, linear. Flowers bisexual, white or pink; sepals inconspicuous or absent; petals obovate, apex inflexed; nectary conical, thick. Fruit oblong or ovoid, laterally compressed, tuberculate or spiny with barbed prickles in grooves; mericarps with slender ciliate ribs; carpophore bifid.
About c. 20 species, mainly in the Mediterranean region; 2 species naturalised in Australia.
