Shubs or subshrubs, sometimes perennial or annual herbs. Leaves alternate or the lower sometimes opposite, often fasciculate, margins entire or sometimes toothed. Inflorescence terminal, spicate, racemose, capitate, corymbose or paniculate, bracteate. Sepals 5, fused, shortly or deeply lobed; corolla equally (4–)5-lobed or 2-lipped, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed, longer than upper lip, tube cylindric or funnel-shaped; stamens 4, in pairs of unequal length; stigma simple or minutely 3-dentate; Fruit oblong, ovoid, or subglobose, included in calyx, often separating into 2 mericarps.
150 species mainly from southern Africa extending to tropical Africa; 2 species recorded in Australia.
