Austrostipa muelleri
(Tate) S.W.L.Jacobs & J.EverettRhizomatous perennial, culms branched, wiry, erect or decumbent, to 1 m long, nodes glabrous. Leaves glabrous; blade closely inrolled, to 25 mm long and 1 mm diam., soon deciduous; ligule glabrous, c. 0.2 mm long. Inflorescence a reduced panicle 2–5 cm long, of 1–4 spikelets. Glumes 18–30 mm long purplish, narrowly truncate, subequal; lemma 13–20 mm long, brown at maturity, evenly covered with short white hairs, apical lobes c. 3 mm long; coma absent; callus 2–3 mm long; awn once or twice bent, 50–100 mm long, the straight part 40–70 mm long, minutely pubescent; palea 3–5 mm shorter than lemma with a line of hairs down the centre. Flowers Oct.–Dec.
GleP, VVP, GipP, OtP, Gold, GGr, HSF, Strz. Also SA. Locally common in heathy woodland formations on poorly drained, infertile soils, but of disjunct occurrence from near Noojee to the SA border.
