Plants mostly 15–30 cm high. Leaves 2–4 mm wide; spikelets 3–5 mm long. Flowers mostly Sep.–Mar.
GipP, EGL, EGU. Also Qld, NSW. Locally common in seepage areas, in rock crevices, revegetated low dunes at Port Melbourne (where possibly an introduction), low dunes at Seaford, and along the Gippsland coast to the NSW border.
Some intergradation with var. walshii may occur around the Gippsland Lakes where both varieties occur.
