Erect or spreading annual or biennial herb. Leaves alternate, sessile or shortly petiolate. Inflorescence an open panicle. Flowers bisexual or female; perianth 5-lobed; stamens (when present) 5; stigmas 2 or 3. Fruiting perianth papery, with a broad, toothed, equatorial wing; fruit a depressed-globose utricle with membranous pericarp; seed horizontal, lenticular with crustaceous testa.
Monotypic genus native to North America, established in Victoria but apparently not elsewhere in Australia.
