Tecoma
Erect to scandent shrubs. Leaves opposite, imparipinnate, rarely simple. Inflorescences terminal racemes or panicles. Flowers pedicillate; calyx cup-shaped, shallowly 5-lobed; corolla tubular, 2-lipped; corolla-lobes imbricate in bud; stamens 4, in 2 pairs of unequal length, exerted from or included in corolla-tube. Fruit a loculicidal capsule, linear-oblong; seeds many, flat, discoid, surrounded by a broad hyaline wing.
12 species native to South America and South Africa; 2 species naturalised in Australia.
The two African species, including Tecoma capensis (Thunb.)Lindl., have been considered as a separate genus, Tecomaria (Endl.) Spach. However this distinction has no morphological or genetic support (Wood 2008) and consequently the African species are here included in Tecoma.
