Microbryum starkeanum
(Hedw.) R.H.ZanderParoicous. Gregarious on bare ground, pale green. Stems simple, 0.9–2.2 mm long. Leaves erect when moist, somewhat contorted when dry, oblong-lanceolate or broadly ovate, 0.7–1.2 mm long, 0.3–0.5 mm wide; apex acute; costa ceasing in apex or excurrent in a cuspidate point; margin entire, revolute or recurved; laminal cells in apical half rounded-quadrate to hexagonal, 10–16 μm wide, papillose, with C-shaped papillae; KOH reaction red; basal cells rectangular, 23–50 μm long, 10–16 μm wide. Seta c. 2.5 mm long, yellow. Capsule ellipsoid or shortly oblong, 0.5–0.7 mm long, dark brown. Peristome absent or short to 120 μm tall, yellowish. Operculum conic or apiculate, c. 0.2 mm long. Spores coarsely and obtusely tuberculate, 25–30 μm diam.
Infrequently recorded from disturbed sites in the western half of the state. Also WA, SA and NSW. New Zealand and northern temperate regions.
