Erect perennial, to 150 cm high; glabrous. Leaves simple, decurrent, to 15 cm long; rosette leaves oblanceolate, more or less petiolate, margins sometimes undulate or slightly toothed near base; upper leaves linear-lanceolate to narrowly ovate, sometimes apiculate. Bracts persistent; pedicels 1–3 mm long; sepals 4(–5), ovate-elliptic, 1–3 mm long, persistent; petals 3 or 4, pale yellow, larger petal usually 5–7-lobed, to c. one-third of petal length, lobes broad, variously incised, other petals 1–3-lobed; stamens 10–32; filaments persistent. Capsule subglobose, 3–4 mm long, 3-toothed, deeply furrowed, summit usually open; seed smooth, shiny. Flowers most of year.

LoM, MuM, Wim, GleP, VVP, VRiv, MuF, GipP, OtP, Gold, CVU, DunT, NIS, EGL, EGU, HNF, OtR, MonT, VAlp. Naturalised all States except NT. Native from Europe to Afghanistan. Widespread weed of road verges, pastures and river-banks.
