Thlaspi arvense
L. Penny CressAnnual herbs to c. 60 cm high, glabrous, somewhat foetid; stems erect, sometimes branched towards apex. Basal leaves petiolate, oblanceolate, spathulate or obovate, to c. 5 cm long, lacking basal lobes; stem leaves sessile, oblong, (0.5–)1.5–4(–8) cm long, entire or toothed, sagittate or auriculate at base. Sepals ovate or oblong, 2–3 mm long; petals 3–5 mm long, clawed, white. Fruit obovate or suborbicular, c. 10–20 mm long and wide, broadly winged, wings widening towards deeply notched apex; seeds blackish brown, ovoid, 1.5–2 mm long, concentrically striate.
Naturalised in NSW, Tas. Native to Eurasia. Collected once in Victoria, with the only vouchered record at MEL from a pea crop at Leongatha South in 1942.
This species is characterised by its large, broadly winged fruits with more than 1 seed per locule.
