Annual herbs, mostly hoary tomentose; hairs usually branched or stellate. Leaves simple, margins entire. Inflorescence an elongating raceme. Sepals erect, not saccate; petals clawed; stamens 6. Fruit flattened or inflated, less than 3 times as long as broad, dehiscent, not veined, with broad septum; style short, stigma capitate or notched; seeds 1–6 (4–6 in Australia) per locule, usually winged.
Over 100 species, mostly native to Mediterranean region, 1 naturalised in Australia.
