Piptochaetium
Tufted perennials. Leaf-blades involute. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets with 1 bisexual flower; glumes paired, persistent, longer than lemma (excluding awn); lemma articulate above glumes, acute to truncate at apex; callus short, hairy; lemma firm, the margins not overlapping, often narrowly exposing the palea, 3-nerved, awned from apex; awn once or twice bent, longer than lemma, persistent or deciduous; palea thickened except along margins, grooved along the midline, equal to or slightly exceeding the lemma.
27 species, from North and (mostly) South America; 3 weakly naturalised in Australia.
