Stem erect with wiry roots. Rhizomes present. Leaves alternate, 5–17 mm long, c. 0.5 mm wide, glabrous except for margin which is often scabrid; basal sheath straw-coloured; apex pungent to subobtuse. Inflorescence 1-flowered, terminal. Flowers bisexual, sessile, surrounded by dry, membranous bracts; perianth shining metallic blue or purple; stamens inserted at base of perianth lobes, anthers exserted, often turning orange, red or brown; ovary 1-locular, ovules 3; style exserted, turned to one side, longer than stamens, stigma simple. Fruit indehiscent; seed 1, spindle-shaped, c. 5 mm long.

11 species, 10 endemic in south-western WA and 1 endemic in south-eastern SA and western Victoria.
