Erect to decumbent biennial to 60(–80) cm high; stems c. fleshy, deeply reddened, becoming glabrous; taproot slender. Leaves ovate to broad-ovate, 2–23 cm long, deeply palmatisect with 3–5 irregularly (bi)pinnatisect primary lobes; ultimate lobes obtuse to acute, distinctly mucronate; upper surface with scattered hairs; stipules c. ovate, margin ciliate. Flowers paired; peduncles to 7 cm long; pedicels to 0.8–2 cm long, minutely glandular-pubescent with scattered coarse glandular hairs; sepals ovate to narrow-lanceolate, 7–8 mm long, with long glandular hairs, mucro 2–4 mm long; petals obovate, 18–22 mm long, truncate to slightly retuse, bright pink to magenta; anthers pink. Fruit 20–30 mm long; mericarps c. glabrous to pilose, wrinkled; seeds smooth Flowers Oct.–Dec.
*CVU, *GipP, *HSF, *OtP, *OtR, *VVP. Also naturalised in SA, Tas. Native to Madeira. A garden-escape, naturalised in drainage lines near Ballarat and Melbourne suburbs, and roadsides in tall wet forests near Lavers Hill and in the Dandenong Ranges.
