Weakly caespitose annuals; culm nodes glabrous; ligule membranous, acute or obtuse. Inflorescence paniculate, sometimes contracted. Spikelets pedicellate, laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes, bisexual, 1-flowered; rachilla glabrous, shortly prolonged beyond floret; callus glabrous or with a few short hairs; glumes 2, unequal to subequal, slightly longer than to slightly shorter than floret, awnless or shortly awned, keeled, acute, the lower 1-nerved, the upper 3-nerved; lemma shortly bifid, awned, firmer-textured than glumes, dorsally rounded, 5-nerved; awn dorsal, subapical, fine, straight or weakly flexuose, longer than lemma; palea 2-nerved, 2-keeled; stamens 3; ovary glabrous; grain free from lemma and palea.
