Shrubs and subshrubs. Leaves cauline, alternate, entire. Inflorescence of usually solitary, terminal capitula or sometimes a corymb; capitula pedunculate, discoid, campanulate or globose; involucral bracts in 4–5 series, herbaceous with membranous margins; receptacle flat or convex. Florets tubular, bisexual, 5-lobed, yellow; anthers obtuse at base with lanceolate apical appendage; style with linear branches, ovate and glandular at apex. Cypselas obovate, compressed; pappus of barbellate bristles in 1 row.
c. 50 species native to Africa and South America; 1 species formerly sparingly established in Australia.
