Tufted annuals or perennials; leaf-blade flat; ligule shortly ciliate. Inflorescence a spike-like panicle. Spikelets 1-flowered, subsessile, borne in pairs or in groups of up to 5 on panicle branches, the pairs or groups falling as a unit; glumes 1 or 2, if 2 the outer minute or obsolete, inner glume thick, with rows of coarse bristles along the 5 nerves; lemma and palea membranous, shorter than larger glume.
7 species, mostly in Africa; 2 occurring in Australia (1 naturalized), 1 in in Victoria.
