Perennials. Inflorescence a raceme or slender panicle. Spikelets with 1 bisexual flower above 2 sterile ones; glumes paired, minute, persistent; lemmas 3, falling as a unit; the lower 2 sterile, with a bristly stipe-like callus at the base, awned; upper lemma fertile, not awned; palea thinner and shorter than fertile lemma; stamens 4 (in Victoria) or 2.
