Annual or perennial herbs, usually hairy; hairs simple or attached by middle. Leaves simple, margins entire. Inflorescence an elongating raceme. Sepals spreading, not saccate; petals short, clawed; stamens 6. Fruit less than 3 times as long as broad, dehiscent, with septum across broadest diam.; style short, stigma capitate; valves slightly inflated, with midvein and weaker lateral veins; seeds 1–5 (1 in Australia) per locule, usually winged.
5 species of the Mediterranean and Atlantic regions, 1 naturalised in Australia.
