Gymnomitrion
Terrestrial or lithophytic, dioecious or autoecious (not in Victoria). Stems irregularly branched, with two ranks of lateral leaves, erect with normal leaves and prostrate with microphylls or rarely normal leaves (not in Victoria); branches emerging from main stem near lateral leaves and with or rarely without a collar of tissue at base. Lateral leaves incubous to slightly succubous, imbricate, erect-appressed or loosely spreading (not in Victoria), ovate to oblong or orbicular (not in Victoria) in outline, usually bilobed, rarely not lobed (not in Victoria), concave adaxially; lobes entire or crenulate, but often erose with age, acute or setaceous (not in Victoria). Underleaves rarely present and few-celled (not in Victoria), slightly fused at base on one side to adjacent lateral leaf. Leaf cells oblong, elliptic to circular, smooth or finely papillose, thick-walled becoming collenchymatous with bulging trigones toward base, usually with 2–4 ovoid to ellipsoid and finely granular oil bodies, often becoming hyaline and without oil bodies close to margin. Androecia with several pairs of leaf-like but slightly more ventricose bracts, each with 1–3 antheridia. Sporophyte at apex of leading stem, surrounded by bracts; bracts similar to normal vegetative lateral leaves but larger, sometimes apical pairs with dentate to lacerate margins, those closest to sporophyte abruptly reduced in size to bractlets; perianth absent. Capsule spherical, 2–3-stratose, barely emergent beyond bracts when fully mature; elaters 2–4-spiral.
Around 30 species, mostly from northern temperate to polar regions, but also high altitude areas in Central America, northern and western South America, central to southern Africa, south-east Asia, Malesia, New Zealand and south-east Australia (Váňa et al. 2010; Mamontov et al. 2019); one species, G. incompletum (Gottsche) R.M.Schust., in Victoria.
