Phillyrea latifolia
L. Mock PrivetShrub or small tree to c. 15 m high; stems smooth, becoming finely reticulate, puberulent, glabrescent with age. Leaves dimorphic; juvenile leaves ovate-cordate to -lanceolate, mostly 2–7 cm long and 10–40 mm wide, coarsely toothed; adult leaves lanceolate to elliptic, 1–6 cm long, 4–20 mm wide, entire or finely toothed. Pedicels 1–3 mm long. Calyx to c. 1 mm long, lobes triangular, margins ciliate; corolla 1.5–2.5 mm long, tube shorter than lobes; stamens c. 1.5 mm long, anthers subsessile. Drupe globose, c. 10 mm diam. Flowers spring.
VVP, GipP, Gold. Native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. Naturalised in Eucalyptus microcarpa woodland within vicinity of the Castlemaine Botanic Gardens, beside railway line near Lyndhurst, and recently collected in south-west Victoria.
