  Annuals or perennials, culms erect or decumbent. Leaf-blades flat; ligule membranous, short. Inflorescence a spike-like raceme with the rachis flattened or recessed to accommodate spikelets. Spikelets many-flowered, laterally compressed; glumes persistent, several-nerved, shorter than florets; lemma 7-nerved, linear-lanceolate, dorsally rounded with a terminal awn; palea ciliate, equal to body of lemma.
10 species, from Eurasia; 2 naturalised in Australia.
