Amblystegium serpens
(Hedw.) Bruch & Schimp.Autoicous. Mats on soil or logs, yellow- or bright-green. Stems creeping, irregularly or subpinnately branched, with a small central strand. Stem and branch leaves similar, erect-spreading when moist, appressed when dry, narrowly lanceolate, c. (0.5–) 0.6–0.8 mm long, (0.15–) 0.2–0.27 mm wide, slightly concave or plane; apices finely acuminate; costae weak, extending to c. 1/2–2/3 leaf length; margins weakly denticulate or entire, plane; laminal cells oblong-hexagonal, 12–55 μm long, 7–12 μm wide, smooth; alar cells quadrate, forming a poorly defined, large group often extending to beyond widest point of leaf. Setae 10–25 mm long, red, smooth. Capsules cylindric, inclined, curved, 1.5–2.2 mm long. Operculum bluntly conic.
VVP, GipP, CVU, HSF. Recorded from disturbed creek beds and gardens around Ballarat and Melbourne. Also SA, QLD, NSW, ACT and Tas. New Zealand and widespread in the Northern Hemisphere and South America.
