Amblystegium
Autoicous. Asexual propagules absent. Mats on soil or logs. Stems creeping, irregularly or subpinnately branched, with rhizoids along stem or immediately below leaf insertion, rarely tomentose; paraphyllia absent; central strand present. Stem and branch leaves similar, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, arranged around stem and facing all directions, erect spreading when moist, appressed when dry, straight or weakly falcate, not decurrent; apex acuminate; costa single, ill-defined, extending around half to 2/3 of the leaf length; margin entire or denticulate, plane, without a border; laminal cells oblong-hexagonal, smooth, unistratose; alar cells well differentiated, quadrate, not inflated, forming an ovate or transversely triangular region. Capsule inclined to horizontal, curved, cylindric, with an annulus. Calyptra cucullate, smooth, glabrous. Operculum conic. Peristome double; endostome same height as exostome teeth, with a basal membrane half the height of teeth; cilia present.
One species widespread in the Northern Hemisphere and South America and disjunct in New Zealand and south-east Australia.
